Family Connectivity Strategy
Staying connected during our 23-day adventure through South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Maldives is essential for navigation, translation, emergencies, and sharing our experiences. This guide outlines our family connectivity plan with eSIMs, power adapters, and essential apps.
Our Mobile Data Strategy
The Plan:
- Airalo multi-country eSIMs for all iOS family members
- Data plan: Asia 20GB for €49 (covers all except Maldives)
- Premium option: Asia 50GB for €100 if needed
- Separate eSIM for Maldives via Revolut or Airalo
Critical Safety Measures:
- Keep roaming off at all times - international data charges can exceed €15/MB
- Contact Movistar before departure to confirm roaming is disabled
- Use airplane mode when not actively needing data
- Download offline maps as backup for navigation

What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your phone that lets you activate a cellular plan without needing a physical SIM card. Perfect for international travel, you can maintain your Spanish phone number while using local data.

Maldives Options
For the Maldives portion of our trip, we'll need a separate plan. We have two options:

Note: The resort also offers WiFi throughout the property, so data needs will be minimal.
eSIM Setup Instructions
Before Departure:
- Download and install the Airalo app
- Create an account and verify your email
- Purchase the Asia Traveler eSIM
- Do NOT activate until you arrive at your destination
- Make sure your iPhone has "Data Roaming" turned OFF
Upon Arrival:
- Open the Airalo app
- Tap on your purchased eSIM
- Tap "Activate" and follow the prompts
- Go to Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan
- Scan the QR code shown in the app
- Use the new cellular plan for data only
Family Setup:
Mom and Dad will have active eSIMs throughout the trip for primary connectivity. Teens will activate their eSIMs as needed, especially when splitting up for different activities. Everyone should download offline maps as backup.

App Preparation Checklist
Before Departure:
- Install all essential apps before leaving Spain
- Download offline maps for all destinations in Google/Apple Maps
- Download offline language packs in Google Translate (Korean, Japanese)
- Make important documents available offline in Google Drive
- Create a WhatsApp group for family sharing
Device Management:
- Clear unused apps and photos to free up space
- Ensure at least 5GB free space for apps, maps, and photos
- Set up iCloud/Google Photos backup for trip photos
- Pre-download entertainment (Netflix, Spotify) for flights
- Enable "Find My" location sharing with family members
Disabling Roaming on All Devices
Critical: Disable Data Roaming
International data roaming charges can exceed €15 per MB. To avoid hundreds or even thousands of euros in unexpected charges, you must disable roaming on all family devices before departure.
iPhone & iPad
- Open Settings
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data)
- Tap Cellular Data Options (or Mobile Data Options)
- Toggle Data Roaming to OFF
- Under "Cellular Data Network" (or APN), check that "Data Roaming" is also OFF
Repeat for each device and double-check before boarding the plane
Apple Watch (Cellular)
- On your iPhone, open the Watch app
- Tap My Watch tab
- Tap Cellular
- Turn off Cellular Data Roaming
- Consider removing the cellular plan entirely for the trip
Note: You may need to reconfigure your cellular plan after returning
eSIM Management
- Go to Settings > Cellular
- Select your Spanish SIM plan
- Turn OFF this plan completely while abroad
- Only turn ON your travel eSIM when needed
- In emergencies, briefly enable the Spanish SIM for calls only (not data)
When activating the travel eSIM, make sure your Spanish SIM is disabled
Additional Precautions
- Contact Movistar customer service to request a complete international roaming block for all family lines
- Take screenshots of your roaming settings for easy reference
- Use Airplane Mode when not actively using your phone, then selectively enable WiFi
- Disable "Wi-Fi Assist" which can activate cellular data when WiFi is weak
- Turn off automatic app updates and background app refresh
- Disable automatic iCloud backups and photo uploads over cellular
- Consider setting data usage warnings or limits as a backup precaution
- Pre-download all entertainment content before departure
Family Check: Have all family members disable roaming together
Create a "tech preparation" session before the trip where everyone disables roaming together. Have each family member verify settings on their own devices while you supervise. Don't assume teens will remember to do this on their own!
